What to look for in the edit
When evaluating an editor’s work, it helps to separate the choices you like from the ones you would change. Use this sample as a starting point for that conversation.
- Pacing: notice the length of shots, the rhythm between cuts and the way the film moves from one section to the next.
- Color: consider whether the overall direction suits the look you want for your studio.
- Sound design: listen to the relationship between sound and picture, and decide what role you want music and natural sound to play in your own film.
- Transitions: look at how adjoining shots connect and whether you prefer a quieter or more pronounced treatment.
Your next project can have a different direction. Share your own references and explain what should carry across from them. A timestamp and a short note are more useful than a reference link on its own.
Turn your observations into a brief
Tell us the people and moments that matter, the intended audience and the required output. If you prefer a slower opening, more natural audio or a different color direction, include that in the brief. The available footage and agreed scope determine what is practical for your project.
